It is rare to see the pro-life position fairly presented in popular culture, but on October 23rd, NBC’s crime series, Law & Order, did just that. In an episode entitled “Dignity,” the homicide detectives and prosecuting attorneys handle a case involving the cold-blooded shooting of a late-term abortion doctor, which is strikingly similar to the murder of George Tiller earlier this year. [The Right to Life Committee strongly denounced the murder of George Tiller.] As the investigation and the subsequent criminal trial progress, various characters, including the detectives and prosecutors, grapple with the ethics and morality of abortion in a surprisingly honest way. Numerous pro-life arguments are passionately presented and defended in the episode.
As one detective defends the necessity of abortions in the case of rape, his partner responds, “You’ve got it backwards, man! The horrible thing is the rape, not the bringing of a life into the world.”
In a conversation between the executive assistant district attorney and the assistant district attorney, the executive ADA says, “An unborn child is a life and a soul to me. I can revert to P.C. in the courtroom, because it’s my job, but I’m not going to do it in my own office.”
During the trial of the man accused of the abortion doctor’s killing, a man whose daughter was scheduled to have an abortion at 28 weeks testified, “I think a woman has a right to decide what happens with her own body, but I teach science, and the facts told me that Blair’s baby was viable, that he had a chance at life. It wasn’t just about Blair anymore.”
In the DA’s office after hearing a particularly emotional testimony in court, the executive ADA vents to the DA, “In its day, Roe v. Wade conformed to what we knew then about human life and science…Thirty-five years later, birth defects can be corrected, disabled children are protected by a bill of rights, contraception of every kind is available.” When the DA counters, “Yet people who don’t want to still get pregnant,” the executive ADA responds, “So their rights should reign supreme? …Cats and dogs have more rights than the unborn!”
If you have a chance to watch this episode of Law & Order, it will definitely be worth your time. The episode accurately reflects the changing sentiments of the American public regarding abortion and highlights the outdated thinking that still undergirds the pro-abortion movement.
“Dignity” may be viewed online through Amazon.com’s Video on Demand for $1.99. After viewing the episode, if you would like to express your appreciation to NBC for fairly presenting the pro-life position, you may do so here.
